Training Your Dog To Be A Great Companion

Dog Training Singapore

There are a few types of dog training. Each school claimed their method is better and some seem to be more humane than the rest. The types of training are dependent on the objective and the age of the dog. Most common training are for obedience, however there are advanced training for specific roles (such as drug sniffing) or for dog competitions.

n Singapore, most of the basic training is done over the weekend at a park, an open space or the back of a landed property. Some trainers done their training overseas and have some certifications while some trainers simply have a trained dog or self-taught.

Before engaging a dog trainer, it would certainly be helpful to have a better understanding of the method to be used and their qualifications. Experience dog trainers should be able to provide a list of track records and welcome owners to have a look at the classes without their dogs.

Positive Reinforcement Training

The most popular obedience class training is using positive reinforcement. That is, the dog gets a reward after having done a desired behavior. Reward could come in the form of praise, a petting session, letting the pet to play with his/her favorite toy or give the dog anything he/she loves.

The most obvious reward to is to give the dog a small treat, especially when almost every dog is greedy for food. The treat should be a healthy choice and in small bits, something like the size of a peanut.

Eventually, you will likely not need to give treats at a later stage when your dog is eager to please you and is zippy about it. An important aspect is your tone of voice and when the owners portray positive energy. Every dog has the amazing capability to “feel”. During training, it is encouraged to be exaggerated and for instance saying ‘Good Boy’ or ‘Yes’ in an upbeat manner.

Clicker Training

This is getting popular of late where the owners use a clicker (producing a click sound) and the dog associate each click for having done the desired behavior. This can yield amazing results even from the first day of training.

One main advantage of using the clicker is to be able to effective communicate with the dog at the precise moment when the dog performed the desired behavior. For instance, when the dog is being taught on how and when to sit, the owner would click at the moment the dog butt touches the floor, followed by a treat.

For a start, the owner would need to be generous with his/her treats to motivate the dog. Treats do not have to be big but it should be a high motivating food.

This clicker training is similar to ‘classical conditioning’, which is commonly known as Pavlov’s Dog Experiment. It was an experiment where Dr Pavlov would ring a bell before feeding the dog. After a while, the dog would start to salivate at the sound of the bell.

Potty Training

Potty training may seem to be rather difficult. The hardest part is actually having the patience to demonstrate to your puppy the same thing over and over again.

Getting a new puppy is always very exciting and they do not come potty trained. It is up to the owner to teach the puppy. The puppy would not know that he should not relieve in the house and he would not know how to communicate with the owner when he needs to relieve.

Most importantly is do not get angry at your puppy. Most of the time when there is an ‘accident’, it is likely that the puppy have the signals but the owners missed them. The owners need to have a good schedule for the puppy such as going out after every meal and every time they play. They would usually need to go potting when they wake up.

Some of the signals which you can expected and be sensitive to are when the puppy:

– Sniff the floor
– Look for a private place
– Go back to the location which he previously had an ‘accident’
– Go to the door
– Giving the owners glances
– Whine or even bark

As the puppy gets older, he will figure out how to communicate with the owner.

At Zippy Pet Services, we will find you the best trainer available according to your schedule and to your requirements. In addition to the general obedience training, there are also many advanced trainings available such as for walking without lease or in preparation for the agility competition.

Pet Services

Although Zippy Pet Services is quite new in the market but their network is really great. I had a grooming package for my Shih Tzu and they did a great job in the haircut including cutting of nails (which I hate), cleaning of ears and others. I was impressed by the dog groomer.
